Sunset at Miyajima Island

Miyajima island is famous for being one of the most scenic places in Japan especially during sunrise and sunset. From Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, we took an hour long ferry ride to Miyajima island also known as Itsukushima island.

Going around the island we were amused by some wild deer that seem accustomed around people. We posed with them for a few photos because they seem harmless, but compared to those deer in Nara, these deer are not allowed to be pet or fed. They are generally tame until they find a tissue or papers to take away from you.

We were hoping to go up Mount Misen via a ropeway and also visit the floating Itsukushima Shrine but by the time we got to the island, both the ropeway and the floating shrine were already closed. As a tip, if you will arrive late in the afternoon, like we did, then it’s best to stay overnight at the island and explore the place the following day. Another option is to arrive early in the morning and spend an entire day to go around Miyajima island.

We may have missed the other tourist spots in Miyajima island but we still enjoyed the most important highlight that it offers. At between 6pm to 7 pm, alongside other tourists and locals, we too sat at the edge of the island, and took as many pictures as we could while we quietly watched the mesmerizing display of red-orange hues that is of the Miyajima sunset.
